Our Story Volume I
First Impressions through “That Monday”
The majority of the following story is told through the eyes of Callie Walters. Direct excerpts from diaries are indicated by double quotes while our commentary thoughts are single quote marks. Randon’s side and reaction to the story is indicated by italicized, green, type.
It all started in a Spanish class at MCC in the fall of 2005. I walked in and saw a really clean cut looking guy (I knew he had to be LDS, I could just tell) sitting there. So I sat next to him and struck up a conversation. He was polite but….vague. He totally blew me off. This is the part of the story that we will never agree on. So I forgot about him and sat next to a couple of really nice girls, and he sat behind me. Throughout the semester our conversations went from “what’s up’s” and “hi’s” to, “What did you do for family home evening?” and “How was your weekend, what did you do?” He was dating someone at the time and I was going through one of my “I hate men” phases so it was just one of those nice people in your class kind of deal. Until... we happened to work together on an in-class assignment. We got done pretty quickly so we started chatting. I was telling him about this awful blind date I went on that weekend, which led to him telling me about some fun dates he had been on and all these cool ideas he had for dates. Somewhere in the midst of all the talking I asked if he would come and help me study (you see, he was really good at Spanish and I was horrible!) because we had a final the next week. His phone was out of his pocket faster than you can say, “Sure!” So he got my number and agreed to study with me….and since he had my number anyway he asked if I wanted to go on a date that weekend. He wanted to go ice-skating on Friday but I had a work party so we ended up going Saturday after my ward party (where I made a complete idiot of myself but that’s a whole other story). Coincidentally this happened the week after I had broken up with this girl I had been dating. Even towards the end of dating this other girl I had the thought run across my mind that I really wanted to take out Callie. So as soon as we broke up Callie came to mind and soon this study session presented itself.
He picked me up from my ward party and right away I could tell he loved music because he made me listen to “The Format” quite loudly. We headed back to his apartment to meet up with one of the other couples going on the date (his roommate Cameron and his date Katie). We rode with them to pick up the pizza and met up with everyone else at Tempe Town Lake. “So we ate pizza and long boarded (which I have never done before) and just messed around but it was really one of the funnest times I’ve had in a long time.” I just have to add that I told Randon in class once how much I love Tropicana apple juice and he brought it to drink with the pizza. Ohhhhh… so sweet. He is such a good rememberer. “I told him I had to go to the bathroom so he walked with me over to the bathrooms. Well when I came out he was gone so I was looking around and all of a sudden a snowball comes flying out of nowhere. He found a pile of snow in the middle of this park area! So I went over and we started having a snowball fight. SO FUN! There was a bunch of little kids building a snowman and I went over behind them and told them to throw snowballs at Randon so they all did and it was so cute! Anyway, then we walked down Mill Ave. and just talked and laughed and free style walked and silly walked, and just were really random! We got ice-cream and it was just really fun!” He dropped me off and after a really awkward door scene, I went in thinking “That was fun, he’s a nice guy” and that was it. I remember what really struck me about Callie was that she was so free to have fun just like me. When I tossed that snowball she jumped right in. She wasn’t shy or embarrassed around everyone but she walked silly with us. I was also impressed with how she interacted with my friends. She was so friendly and kind and interested in what people had to say. I could tell that it was genuine. It wasn’t showing off the way people tend to do on dates. It really was how Callie was and that impressed me. I thought to myself that I would definitely take her out again. The next day was Sunday and he text me and invited me to come to a party he and his roommates were having but I was really not in the mood, so I made up some lame excuse about how I had to study for the final (which was the next day). Needless to say I didn’t study and I wished later I had gone.
Monday, the Spanish Final. I got there first and was talking to the girls I sat by. I had told them the week before that he had asked me out so they were asking me about it. I was basically saying what I had thought the night he dropped me off, “he’s a nice guy, I had fun.” Enter Randon. All he says is ‘So hi.’ but the way he said it was just so incriminating, it made it sound like we had made out in the back seat of his car for two hours. I don’t usually get embarrassed easily but my face went the deepest shade of rose… it’s never done that. So I said ‘hi’ and quickly tried to explain that nothing had happened and I didn’t know why I was so embarrassed. So we took the final and Randon finished like ten or fifteen minutes before me. When he left “I was just thinking he would call me and we would talk later. So I got done around 6:05 and walked and….ohhhhhhh he was waiting for me. SO CUTE! We stood there talking until 9:45!!! We talked about everything; our families, past relationships, the gospel, things about ourselves, just everything! It was so fun!” I remember walking away thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, I totally like him.’ I think I even told my roommates that when I got home. When Callie got out of the final I was standing outside talking to my mom on the phone killing time. She walked over and put her head on my shoulder in relief of the final being over. We started just chatting and I remember many times there was that natural pause where either one of us could have said, ‘Well I have to go so…’ but I just couldn’t do it. I felt drawn. I was really interested in talking to her and I wasn’t going to be the one who said goodbye first. I distinctly remember how bad I had to go to the bathroom throughout our conversation. I remember that I had drunk a large soda before class and even had to go before it had started but had ignored it until that urged returned again at the beginning of our conversation. I feared saying I had to go to the bathroom would end the conservation so ignored it. So I ended up holding it for a total of about five hours. If you asked me to this day I will tell you that something magical happened during our conversation. I don’t know if it was the opportunity to talk about such a diverse array of topics, the timing, or the lighting. Or maybe it was all of these things combined but Callie continued to become more and more pretty to me throughout the conversation. I really felt something different with her. It was what I had waned in so many past situations and it was genuine. I remember saying to her, “I don’t know how to say it but I really feel like we have connected”, she agreed. Ever since then we have come to refer to that experience as “that Monday”.

The Beginning
An initial and brief entry. My only experience to blogging in the past was part of a requirement for a Cinematography class I took in college. I neither understood how blogs worked or why they where beneficial. It didn't help that I was forced to do it. Now later in college with an evening job that is sure to pose some boring moments I will attempt to try it again. This blog will largely be devoted to filling my boredom. Perhaps it might serve as a way to update those that care in any way about our lives. Maybe it will become a long-sought method for journaling. Or,more likely, it will serve to temporarily fill my boredom.
